For students undertaking this course, the aims are to : -

1. Focus on the theory and concepts of information retrieval system; introduce the basic principles of information storage, processing and retrieval in terms of information retrieval system analysis and design.
2. Give students a strong background concerning the automated storage and retrieval of information.
3. Focus on the techniques for storing and searching for textual documents and cover theoretical aspects of information retrieval design and evaluation and the practical aspects of how these theories have been implemented in actual systems.
